"When Joseph Smith and his brother Hyrum were shot to death in Carthage Jail on 27 June 1844, the dream that had built a haven for the Saints on the banks of the Mississippi died with them. A year later, five prominent citizens of Carthage were charged with conspiracy to commit murder and a trial was held in neighboring Warsaw.
