Description
Charlotte Darby, penniless and alone, is struggling to care for herself and her young sister in the seaport town of Hull. But when a solicitor from London brings news that she has inherited a vast estate in Kent, it seems like far too much for a shipping merchant's daughter to manage. She quickly comes to rely on Henry Morland, the estate steward, whose father is in debtor's prison. Henry, having worked hard his entire life, is willing to take care of Charlotte, but he knows that because she is the county's wealthiest lady, he can never declare his love for her. As Charlotte finds her feet in society, catches the attention of charming gentlemen and scoundrels alike, and tries to keep her sister safe, she faces heartrending decisions.
