Description
A dramatization of Gustave Flaubert's classic about the tragic consequences that await a frivolous woman.
Description
Marriage: Emma meets Charles Bovary, a physician who comes to treat her injured father. Newly widowed he soon begins to shyly court Emma. Longing for an exciting life far away from the farm, Emma consents to marry Charles. But she quickly becomes bored and frustrated with her passionless marrriage, her plodding husband, and his lack of ambition. Then, after a move to a new town, a lonely Emma meets a charming new neighbor, the young student, Leon Dupuis.
Description
First love: In time, an unspoken attraction grows between Emma and Leon. The young man tries to control his feelings, but reveals his love for her in a letter. Consumed by guilt over the flirtation, Emma dedicates herself to becoming a devoted wife. But when dashing womanizer Rudolphe Boulanger arrives, he vows to take her as his mistress. On a carefully planned horseback outing, he seduces her, and Emma experiences real passion at last.
Description
Lost love: Emma plunges into an affair with Rudolphe, slipping out to meet him night after night. Meanwhile, Charles shows signs of ambition when he tries to correct a villager's deformity. When the experiment results in disaster, Emma sees her chance for a better life with Charles slip away and turns on him in frustration. She plots to run away with Rudolphe, but her plans bring more disappointment. Then Emma travels to Rouen with Charles, where she unexpectedly meets her old paramour, Leon Dupuis.
Description
Judgment: Emma abandons all discretion to begin an affair with Leon. Her lavish spending on travel and gifts for him soon throws the Bovarys into debt. She assumes control of her husband's inheritance to cover her spending, and as Emma's desperation grows, her outlandish schemes to beg, borrow or steal money drive Leon away. Abandoning all pride, she humiliates herself in one last effort to get the funds she needs. Then, with the realization that poverty and disgrace are now her destiny, she resorts to a drastic escape from the disappointments that imprison her.
