At the bottom of the picture, a farm sits behind a plowed field, a fence to the left receding into the distance on flat land. Above this picture, an enormous spiral shell hangs in the air; we can see into the shell and see that it contains another, much more rugged landscape, from which a herd of sheep is emerging onto the outside of the shell; beneath the tip of the shell, the world "Calme" appears. Behind the shell is a screen-like structure of fine horizontal lines, growing closer and closer together as the eye moves up the picture; behind the screen are mountains whose presence grows more visible toward the top.
