British intelligence agent Magnus Pym disappears, two desperate searches are initiated, one by agents looking for the missing spy and Pym's own quest to uncover the mysteries of his past.
Episode one: From a tense stakeout, the scene flashes back to the troubled boyhood of Magnus Pym. After his father and mother disappear without explanation, Magnus discovers deceit as a tool for self-preservation.
Episode two: His father, Rick, enlists the now young adult Magnus to carry out a sensitive mission to Bern in the company of a beautiful woman. Circumstances force Magnus to stay on in Switzerland, where he furthers his education in the risks and rewards of espionage.
Episode three: While campaigning for a seat in Parliament, Rick reinvents himself as an honest man, which Magnus finds amusing until a specter from Rick's past reappears. A stint in the Army reunites Magnus with an old "friend."
Episode four: At the urging of Jack Brotherhood, the Firm recruits Magnus despite misgivings that his father is too colorful. Magnus marries a suitable wife, adopts a cover as an electronics salesman, and gets an eventful posting to Prague.
Episode five: Axel and Magnus have made it to America, the pinnacle of their ambitions. But an American agent has noticed a suspicious pattern in Magnus's dealings with his Prague contacts.
Episode six: On an extended holiday in Corfu, Mary becomes increasingly worried about Magnus, who acts unconcerned while even Tom realizes they are being followed. Back in Vienna on an evening when Mary and Magnus are hosting a dinner party, news arrives that unhinges Magnus.
Episode seven: At his seaside hideout, Magnus writes anguished letters to Jack, Mary, and Tom and finds comfort in Mrs. Dubber's motherly presence. Jack interrogates Mary in Vienna as the Firm desperately tries to find Magnus before the Czechs do.
