Description
Ilya is the youngest son of a Russian prince. His only friends in his father's household are a priest, a magician, and an old woman who works in the kitchen, but from them he learns faith, a bit of magic, and the power of love. His brothers delight in tormenting him, and his father looks away. When the orchard is visited by the firebird, Ilya's father and brothers in turn fail to catch the magical creature. Ilya is forbidden to try but disobeys his father and is banished. From there, he travels through a fantastic Russia, a land of mazes, mystical creatures, and many dangers. Ilya saves the life of a fox, who becomes his most faithful companion and then meets an enchanted princess. The two fall in love and Ilya must battle fiercely to raise the spell that has captured his love.
